Traditional Housewarming Ceremony

95% of the Cambodian population are thought to be Buddhists, with such a predominance it’s no surprise that Buddhism permeates every cultural aspect of Cambodian life.

In this gallery, I took snapshots of a friend’s housewarming ceremony.

A housewarming ceremony usually is a morning affair with monks giving blessings starting at 10 am. When all the prayers and blessings are done, they take their lunch between 11 to 11:30 am – by no account should a monk in the Theravada tradition take lunch after 12 or noon.

A monk’s diet may consist of two meals a day, a breakfast at or normally before 7 am and then lunch before noon. Some monks may choose to skip breakfast, but morning chanting may start as early as 4:30 am with coffee.
